Welcome to Oral Communication!
Oral Communications satisfies East Central College's general education requirement, since either this class or Public Speaking are required of ALL transfer degree programs.
Competencies: Students will demonstrate effective communication skills employing thinking skills, theories, language, syntax, usage, and mechanisms as taught in this course. You will be challenged to use new vocabulary that reflects new thinking in perceiving communication through the dimensions in skilled thinking, interpersonal relationships, introspection, emotions, language, nonverbal communication, skilled listening, relational dynamics, and communication climates.
You absolutely must submit the assigned work before the deadline to receive earned credit. In other words, if you are absent on a day in which we do an activity or a quiz, you will receive a zero. If you fail to turn in an assignment by the due date, you will receive a zero. Exams must be taken on the day scheduled, unless other arrangements have been made for a qualifying reason (severe illness with a Doctor’s note, etc.)
Students with disabilities, or those who believe they may need accommodations in this class, are encouraged to make an appointment with Wendy Pecka. An appointment should be made as soon as possible to ensure that accommodations are arranged in a timely manner. I will be happy to assist you with this process should you need any help.

AIM Early Alert
Academic Improvement Management (AIM) System is a web based retention system that allows instructors to notify the ECC Title III retention team of academic at-risk behaviors exhibited in class. Students who are referred to the system will be contacted by the Title III Retention Specialist and have academic services offered as a way to promote academic success. If you are referred to the AIM program, please consider taking advantage of the services provided to help improve your ac academic effectiveness. Classroom Expectations
If you are disruptive I will give you one verbal warning and you will lose participation points for that day. If the behavior continues I will ask you to leave the class and you can be dropped from the class entirely. I have the authority to drop you from the course at any time and I will exercise this right in order to maintain an environment conducive to learning. I want to help each of you do well in the course and I hope to create a professional atmosphere in which I and the other students can reach our goals.
Disrespect in any manner, as defined by the instructor, towards students, faculty or staff will not be tolerated and can result in being dropped from the course.
Activities: These will be in-class opportunities for you to earn points and are only available to those students who participate in class that day. If you have to miss class for a College related reason, please bring me a notice from your sponsor and you will not be penalized.
Participation: Points will be based on the quality of your participation in class. Points will be deducted if you have to be asked to put away your cell phone, MP3 player (or any electronic devices) or to stop talking or any other kind of disruption to the classroom environment. I expect your full attention as the nature of this course is based on improving your communication skills.
Assignments: During the semester you may be asked to complete certain tasks outside of class. Homework is due on the date assigned and will NOT be accepted late. It is your responsibility to get assignments and notes from a classmate if you have to miss class.
Quizzes: Some of these will be announced, and some will be surprise “pop-quizzes”. Just like activities, they are only available to students who are present in class that day. If you have to miss class for a college-related reason, please bring me a notice from your sponsor and you will not be penalized.
Exams: Tests will have a variety of formats including: multiple-choice, true/false, matching and/or short answer. These are scheduled well in advance and you are required to attend class on these days. There will be a total of 2 exams.
Deadlines: You must turn in all assignments on or BEFORE the deadline. Past due assignments will not be accepted and activities, quizzes and exams CANNOT be made up.
Grades: Your grade will be based on 2 tests, in class activity points and participation credit for a total of 500 points possible. You risk losing points if you are absent or disrupt class in any way. Activity points will be based on the quality of work you submit for the assignment.
Mid-Term Exam 200 points (Chapters 1, 7, 6, 3, 2)
Final Exam 200 points (Chapters 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11)
